چکیده

Abstract Hydroacoustic surveys at the accretionary wedge southwest of Taiwan reveal a confined active hydrocarbon seepage area ~ 49,000 m 2 in 1350 water depth on northern crest Four-Way Closure Ridge, which we call Yam Seep. In this study, multibeam and side-scan sonar data acquired during with an autonomous underwater vehicle expedition R/V Ocean Researcher I 2017 showed that is characterized by rough topography high seafloor backscatter. Seafloor observations video sled sediment sampling gravity corers MeBo drill rig SONNE 2018 revealed almost entirely covered intensely fractured methane-derived carbonates, indicate has been ongoing for thousands years. anomalies (‘flares’) column indicated presence several gas bubble emission sites mostly center eastern flank 2019. Drilling through massive carbonates northwestern part Seep induced free escape from 5.1 m. This suggests hydrates subsurface as seep located well within hydrate stability zone. The inter-disciplinary investigations demonstrate upward migration light hydrocarbons discharge considerable influence seabed properties.

Miniaturized biosignature analysis reveals implications for the formation of cold seep carbonates at Hydrate Ridge

Methane-related carbonates from Hydrate Ridge typically show several macroscopically distinguishable mineral phases, namely whitish aragonite, lucent aragonite, and gray micrite. The relationship of these phases to particular microorganisms or biogeochemical processes is as yet unclear. We used a miniaturized biomarker technique on mg samples, combined with factor analysis and subsequent electr...

Methane emission and consumption at a North Sea gas seep (Tommeliten area)

The Tommeliten seepage area is part of the Greater Ekofisk area, which is situated above the Tommeliten Delta salt diapir in the central North Sea (5629.90 N, 259.80 E, Norwegian Block 1/9, 75 m water depth). Here, cracks in a buried marl horizon allow methane to migrate into overlying clay-silt and sandy sediments. Hydroacoustic sediment echosounding showed several venting spots coinciding wit...

Passing gas through the hydrate stability zone at southern Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon

We present an equilibrium model of methane venting through the hydrate stability zone at southern Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon. Free gas supplied from below forms hydrate, depletes water, and elevates salinity until pore water is too saline for further hydrate formation. This system self-generates local three-phase equilibrium and allows free gas migration to the seafloor. Log and core data f...

Methane-Oxidizing Bacteria Shunt Carbon to Microbial Mats at a Marine Hydrocarbon Seep

The marine subsurface is a reservoir of the greenhouse gas methane. While microorganisms living in water column and seafloor ecosystems are known to be a major sink limiting net methane transport from the marine subsurface to the atmosphere, few studies have assessed the flow of methane-derived carbon through the benthic mat communities that line the seafloor on the continental shelf where meth...
